If you are a woman or a vulva owner, chances are you have probably experienced a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)! But why is it so common for us, versus men or those with a penis? Read on to learn more and also find ways to prevent it!

How common are urinary tract infections (UTIs)?

Urinary tract infections affect one in five women (~20%) at some point in their lives. UTIs are disproportionately more common in women than they are in men, older people and kids. Around 1% to 2% of kids have urinary tract infections. Every year, 8 to 10 million patients seek medical attention for urinary tract infections.1

What causes urinary tract infections (UTIs)?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused mainly by bacteria (germs) that enter the bladder, one of the organs in the urinary tract. The most common such germ is called E-coli (Escherichia coli), a bacteria most commonly found in fecal matter (i.e your poop). When E-Coli or any other bacteria enters your bladder via the urethra, you start feeling the symptoms of a urinary tract infection.2

What are the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

The most common symptoms of UTIs include:
Constant and strong urge to pee.
Burning sensation while urinating.
Urine that has a strong smell.
Urinating frequently but in small amounts.
Urine which has a cloudy appearance.
The colour of the urine may be red, bright pink, or coke-coloured, indicating the presence of blood in the urine.
Pelvic pain, mainly at the centre of the pelvis and in the area surrounding the pubic bone
